Useful Waste: Repurposing Construction Mock-Ups

  • AIA Center for Architecture 403 Northwest 11th Avenue Portland, OR, 97209 United States (map)

Every year, exterior envelope construction mock-ups costing $5,000 to $20,000 end up in the landfill. Is there a better, more sustainable way? Our speaker, Julia Mollner of the Center for Public Interest Design at Portland State University, will present a step-by-step process, beginning in the pre-design phase, that highlights how mock-ups can be reused to meet different community needs. She'll discuss the environmental, economic, and social benefits of treating mock-ups as Useful Waste, highlighting the role of the architect in making this possible. She is also seeking volunteers to aid in upgrading mock-ups donated to CPID, for instance by adding interior finishes, wiring, and roofing to a mock-up that has walls and floors. Join us for this informative and timely presentation. Doors open at 5:45 for drinks and light refreshments.
